What is A Shape Memory Alloy Torque Tube

A shape memory alloy (SMA) torque tube is a rotary actuator that uses a nickel-titanium alloy capable of rotating when heated and returning to its original position when cooled.

These are used as lightweight, compact alternatives to conventional motors and hydraulic systems.

How It Works

Twisting

An SMA tube is clamped at one end, and a torque is applied to the other end, causing it to twist.

Phase Changing

The twisting induces a change in the alloy's crystal structure, which stores potential energy. This is a solid-state transformation, meaning no material is lost.

Actuation

When the tube is heated above its activation temperature, the alloy's structure changes back to its original state, and it untwists, generating rotary motion and torque.

Applications

Aerospace: Actuating aircraft control surfaces, folding wires, and other mechanisms.

Spacecraft: Used in mechanisms for deployable structures and other systems.

Thermal management: Acting as self-regulated actuators in systems like radiators.

Other industries: Potential use in oil and gas industry, food processing, and other applications where conventional systems are too bulky or complex.
